Love for God According to the Bible

Whenever we truly love someone, we do our best to show our love to that person. However, to properly show love, we should know how that person wants to receive it. Then what about God? As God’s people, we must have a true love for God. We earnestly desire to express love to our God but just as we express our love according to the individual, we must learn how to express our love toward God. The way God asks us to love Him can be found in the Bible. We should humbly accept God’s request of how to love Him even if it is contrary to our thoughts and opinions. From now on, let us see through the Bible the way that we can love God.

Love God by Obeying His Commands

John 14:15 If you love me, keep my commands.

John 14:21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.

Through this word of Jesus, we can understand that in order to display our love toward God we must obey God’s commands. God is pleased with our obedience, and displeased when we disobey his commands. Then what causes us to disobey God? Disobedience happens when we uphold our own traditions above the commands of God.

Mark 7:6-9 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.” And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

The act of keeping the traditions of men instead of the words of God comes from the mind that lacks love for God. If someone truly loves God, they will even change their tradition in order to follow God’s commands.

God’s Eagerness in the Passover

What is God’s command that God is most eager for His people to keep? It is the Passover of the New Covenant.

Luke 22:7–15 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” … And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Jesus Christ commanded the Passover and even said that He eagerly desired to keep it. Therefore, God’s people regard the Passover as a holy feast and show their love to God by obeying His command to keep it. Jesus Christ, Himself was eager to keep the Passover. If our loved one is eager to do something, don’t we show our love by joining them? Then how can we disregard the Passover that Jesus was eager to keep? Let us keep the Passover so we can show God our burning heart of love toward Him.
